1. Use Fuel Additives Religiously

Ethanol-blended fuel (up to 10% is approved for use in outboards) can cause serious problems if left untreated. Ethanol deteriorates faster than regular gasoline and absorbs water, leading to “phase separation”—where water contaminates the fuel and sinks to the bottom of the tank .

2. Flush After Every Use

Flushing your outboard with fresh water after each use—especially in saltwater—is essential. A 10-minute flush from a garden hose removes salt, mineral deposits, and debris that can clog the cooling system and cause corrosion .
