Engine Terminology Guide

Horsepower (HP)

A unit of measurement for engine power. 1 HP = approximately 746 watts. Higher horsepower means more thrust and speed, but also more weight and fuel consumption.

Displacement

The total volume of all cylinders in an engine, measured in cubic centimeters (cc) or liters (L). Larger displacement generally means more power and torque.

Cylinders

The number of combustion chambers in the engine. Common configurations:
  • Single-cylinder: 1 cylinder — lightweight, simple, lower power
  • Inline-2: 2 cylinders — compact, moderate power
  • Inline-3: 3 cylinders — smooth, good power-to-weight ratio
  • Inline-4: 4 cylinders — very smooth, excellent power
  • V6: 6 cylinders in a V configuration — high power, compact
  • V8/V10/V12: 8, 10, or 12 cylinders — maximum power for large vessels

EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection)

A fuel delivery system that uses electronic sensors and injectors for precise fuel metering. Benefits include better fuel economy, easier starting, smoother operation, and lower emissions compared to carburetors.

Carburetor

A mechanical fuel delivery system that mixes air and fuel. Simpler and lighter than EFI, but less efficient and requires more maintenance.

Measurement: Shaft length is measured from the anti-ventilation plate (just above the propeller) to the top of the mounting bracket where it meets the transom.

Propeller Dimensions

Propellers are described by two numbers: Diameter x Pitch
  • Diameter: The overall width of the propeller circle (in inches)
  • Pitch: The theoretical distance the propeller would move forward in one revolution (in inches)
