Engine Terminology Guide
Horsepower (HP)
A unit of measurement for engine power. 1 HP = approximately 746 watts. Higher horsepower means more thrust and speed, but also more weight and fuel consumption.
Displacement
The total volume of all cylinders in an engine, measured in cubic centimeters (cc) or liters (L). Larger displacement generally means more power and torque.
Cylinders
The number of combustion chambers in the engine. Common configurations:
-
Single-cylinder: 1 cylinder — lightweight, simple, lower power
-
Inline-2: 2 cylinders — compact, moderate power
-
Inline-3: 3 cylinders — smooth, good power-to-weight ratio
-
Inline-4: 4 cylinders — very smooth, excellent power
-
V6: 6 cylinders in a V configuration — high power, compact
-
V8/V10/V12: 8, 10, or 12 cylinders — maximum power for large vessels
EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection)
A fuel delivery system that uses electronic sensors and injectors for precise fuel metering. Benefits include better fuel economy, easier starting, smoother operation, and lower emissions compared to carburetors.
Carburetor
A mechanical fuel delivery system that mixes air and fuel. Simpler and lighter than EFI, but less efficient and requires more maintenance.
2-Stroke vs. 4-Stroke
Table
| Feature | 2-Stroke | 4-Stroke |
|---|---|---|
| Power strokes per cycle | 1 per revolution | 1 per 2 revolutions |
| Weight | Lighter | Heavier |
| Fuel efficiency | Lower | Higher |
| Emissions | Higher | Lower |
| Noise | Louder | Quieter |
| Maintenance | Simpler | More complex |
| Oil mixing | Required (pre-mix) | Not required (separate oil system) |
Note: Most modern outboards are 4-stroke due to environmental regulations and fuel efficiency advantages.
Shaft Length Standards
Table
| Designation | Length | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Short (S) | 15″ (381 mm) | Small boats, inflatables, jon boats, tenders |
| Long (L) | 20″ (508 mm) | Standard fishing boats, runabouts, pontoons |
| Extra Long (X) | 25″ (635 mm) | Deep-V hulls, offshore boats, sailboat auxiliaries |
| Ultra Long (U) | 30″ (762 mm) | Large offshore boats, commercial vessels |
Measurement: Shaft length is measured from the anti-ventilation plate (just above the propeller) to the top of the mounting bracket where it meets the transom.
Propeller Specifications
Propeller Dimensions
Propellers are described by two numbers: Diameter x Pitch
-
Diameter: The overall width of the propeller circle (in inches)
-
Pitch: The theoretical distance the propeller would move forward in one revolution (in inches)
Propeller Materials
Table
| Material | Characteristics | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum | Affordable, lightweight, replaceable | General recreational use, smaller motors |
| Stainless Steel | Durable, efficient, better performance | High-performance boats, larger motors |
| Composite/Plastic | Very lightweight, corrosion-proof | Small motors, trolling, backup props |
Propeller Blade Count
Table
| Blades | Characteristics | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 3-Blade | Standard, good all-around performance | Most applications |
| 4-Blade | Better acceleration, lift, and handling | Watersports, heavy boats, rough water |
| 5-Blade | Maximum grip and smoothness | High-performance, offshore |
Propeller Hub Systems
-
Through-Hub Exhaust: Standard on most outboards; exhaust exits through the propeller hub
-
Over-Hub Exhaust: Used on some high-performance applications
-
Dual-Prop (Counter-Rotating): Two propellers on one shaft rotating in opposite directions; maximum thrust and efficiency
Fuel System Specifications
Fuel Types
Table
| Type | Description | Common Brands |
|---|---|---|
| Unleaded Petrol (95/98 Octane) | Standard fuel for most 4-stroke outboards | All major brands |
| Pre-Mix (2-Stroke Oil + Petrol) | Required for 2-stroke engines | Older models, some racing engines |
| Diesel | Used in inboard diesel engines | Yanmar, Volvo Penta |
Fuel Tank Options
-
Internal Tank: Built into the outboard (small motors, typically under 10 HP)
-
External Portable Tank: 12L, 25L, or 50L portable tanks with fuel line
-
Built-in Boat Tank: Permanent tank integrated into the boat’s hull
Fuel Consumption (Approximate)
Table
